Axie Frey started her painting career after retiring from 26 years of full time employment. Looking for something to do during her retirement years, she watched an oil painting demonstration and was inspired to learn to paint.
In the last few years, Axie has attended many demonstrations, classes and workshops with local and nationally recognized artists. Her love of watercolor, her eye for beauty, and her passion for hard work have taken her far beyond a hobby. Her studio at the Sugar Creek Art Center in Thorntown, Indiana, is her home away from home.
Her new career has led to seven international trips, including Paris, Barcelona, Venice, Israel, Greece, and Egypt where she was inspired to paint a variety of subjects. She tries to catch the play of light and shadow that she sees in a subject, bringing out the vibrancy of color. Axie thanks God for her painting ability and prays that she may continue to grow as an artist.
Although Axie is a world traveler, and her paintings are in both local and international collections, she likes to be home in the Lafayette, Indiana area with her husband. Axie is mother to a son and two daughters. She displays on a regular basis at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette and at Sugar Creek Art Center. Her works are included in the permanent collections of the Frankfort Community Public Library and Ivy Tech College in Lafayette as well as numerous private collections.
Axie also offers a Watercolors class on the last Wednesday of each month from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. No experience is necessary and the classes are ongoing! The class is $30 (includes materials). Call the Art Center to reserve your seat! The next schedule class is Wednesday, March 27th.
