300_smoke-over-high-park_silver_1My art education has been a life-long passion. As a child, I was always experimenting with unconventional materials. Today my playfulness is a bit more focused and refined. Since retiring as an elementary art teacher in June 2008, I have concentrated on creating a portfolio of my original intaglio and relief limited edition art prints. I am printmaking instructor and exhibition gallerist at Sugar Creek Art Center in Thorntown, Indiana. I am also artist-in-residence at Robin Run Village, Indianapolis where I work with a group of talented senior residents.

Mentors have played a huge role in my own fulfillment and success, passing on skills and providing me new opportunities for exploration. I was trained as a jeweler in the 1970s under the tutelage of Alma Eikerman, Distinctive Professor of Metalsmithing at IU, Bloomington. Eikerman instilled in me a ferocious dedication to the skills of masterful craftsmanship based on a solid understanding of design principles and technical skills. The crucible of the metals shop was the perfect place to practice my craft~ an artistry which demands attention to detail, patience and passion. My transformation as a print artist happened many years later and reflects my current interest in narrative, two-dimensional printmaking that, like jewelry, is heavily process oriented.

james-hubbard_sangre-de-cristo_scanned-300I participate in many local, regional & national juried exhibitions and work as a free-lance curator. My 2011 intaglio print, “Field & Stream”, was a 2013 Delta National Small Print Exhibition purchase prizewinner and is a part of the Arkansas State University Art Museum permanent collection. My linocut, “Poudre River~ Rustic”, was purchased in 2014 for the permanent collection of the Anderson Center for the Arts. My linocut, “Mountain Contours through Pines” won second place in the 2015 Indiana Artists Members Exhibition at Minnetrista, Muncie. In April 2016, I won the “Fain Best in Printmaking” award at Providence Rhode Island Art Club’s all media show, “COLOR”, for “Midwest Maize”. Many of my works are part of private collections in Bloomington, Indianapolis and Lafayette.

Currently, I belong to a cadre of local print artists, “67th Street Printmakers” (Indianapolis), the “American Color Print Society” and the “Society of American Graphic Artists”. I am the 2015-2017 Membership Chairman of IN/A (“Indiana Artists” organization) and executive board member of the “Sugar Creek Art Center”~ Thorntown, Indiana. I am just now exploring the artistic possibilities and professional opportunities that I dreamt about years ago.
