Jan Boettcher

janbphotoMy name is Jan Boettcher.  I began my journey of painting the Norwegian folkart of Rosemaling in 1980.  My Grandmother’s family is from the Valdres Valley of Norway.  The Valdres style of Rosmaling is rich in history and full of beauty!  The many styles of Rosemaling are painted on wooden pieces.  There are many unique and lovely Norwegian wooden pieces that influence my painting.

I have taken classes both in Norway and here in the U.S. from Norwegian painters as well as American teachers.  I currently paint about 12 different styles of Rosemaling along with nisse janbart1painting.  I have won awards at the Indiana State Fair, at the Illinois Norsk Rosemaler’s Association, Sons of Norway, Stoughton Rosemaling Club, and at Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum in Decorah, Iowa.  I was juried into the Indiana Artisan in 2011 and have taken part in the Indiana Artisan Marketplace each year since.

Being an Indiana Artisan has been a great honor for me and it has allowed me to meet some wonderful artists and art lovers.  I was added to the Indiana Artisan Advisory Board this year and will serve a two year term.  This past year and this year, I have worked with the Traditional Arts Indiana group demonstrating and participating at the Mather’s Museum and at events and functions around the state of Indiana.  It has been a wonderful opportunity for me that I am so very grateful for.

janbart2I have had several of my Rosemaling pieces published in the “Paintworks” magazine and also the ‘Decorative Painter” magazine.  In 2013, I had one of my published pieces chosen to be on the membership card for the Society of Decorative Painters.  I travel teach as well as teach locally.  I have taught at the Annual Convention for the Society of Decorative Painters which is always a wonderful experience.  I will be teaching in Cincinnati this fall and in Israel next year.

My husband and I have owned and operated Turn of the Century Wood Products in Thorntown, IN since 2002.  We sell our products to decorative artists all over the world.  We work together on so many projects and I am so fortunate to have my own personal woodworker! I have been very blessed to be able to meet wonderful people while enjoying and sharing this beautiful art from Norway!
